First Cruise Ship Finally Escapes the Strait of Hormuz After Weeks of Disruption

There’s finally some movement for cruise lines with ships stranded in Gulf ports.

Celestyal Discovery has become the first known cruise ship to make it through the Strait of Hormuz after Iran said the waterway was open again to commercial traffic on April 17, 2026. The 1,360-guest ship left Port Rashid in Dubai at 11:36 a.m. local time and is now sailing toward Muscat, Oman.

That said, the reopening does not mean the route is suddenly back to business as usual. Passage is still tied to the current ceasefire, and ships are expected to follow coordinated transit procedures through lanes Iran considers safe.

That’s a major step for the cruise industry after the strait had been effectively off limits for weeks, leaving ships trapped inside the Persian Gulf as conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel threw the region into turmoil.

The First Ship Out of the Gulf

For cruise lines, this is the clearest sign yet that ships may finally start getting out of the region.

Celestyal Discovery had been sailing the line’s “Iconic Arabia” itinerary before operations were disrupted, with calls in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas, Doha, Ras al Khaimah, and Khasab. When Iran warned ships on February 28 not to pass through the strait, traffic through the area largely stopped, and cruise lines were left scrambling.

Celestyal Was Hit Hard by the Closure

Celestyal was one of the cruise lines most affected. Because Discovery and Journey are currently the line’s only two ships, the closure effectively left Celestyal’s entire operating fleet stuck in the region.

While Celestyal Discovery remained stuck in Dubai, sister ship Celestyal Journey was left waiting in Doha, Qatar. The line canceled all April departures as both ships were unable to reposition out of the Gulf and back toward the Mediterranean.

Celestyal has said its next planned departures are now May 1, 2026, for Celestyal Discovery and May 2, 2026, for Celestyal Journey. At the time of the latest reports, Journey was still in the region.

Other Cruise Ships Could Soon Follow

Celestyal may have been first, but it likely won’t be alone for long.

Other cruise ships have also been sitting in Gulf ports while waiting for the route to reopen. Reports say MSC Cruises’ MSC Euribia remains in Dubai, while TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 4 is also in Dubai and Mein Schiff 5 is still in Doha.

For MSC, the disruption has already spilled into Europe, with additional Kiel departures canceled after Euribia was unable to begin its repositioning on time.

It was not just those lines feeling the pressure, either. AROYA Cruises also ended the rest of its Arabian Gulf season and safely disembarked guests in Dubai back in early March.

The Next Step Depends on Safety

Even with one successful transit, cruise lines still aren’t in full back-to-normal mode.

Ships heading for Europe still have a long route ahead, from the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman, across the Arabian Sea, through the Suez Canal, and then on to their summer homeports.

Whether other lines move right away will depend on how safe the passage looks over the next few days, along with whatever procedures Iranian authorities require for vessels making the crossing. Shipping groups are still seeking clarity on safe lanes and wider security conditions, so cruise lines may not rush to send every ship through immediately.
