Catalina Island already has the beaches, the clear water, and the kind of Caribbean setting cruisers love. Now MSC wants to turn it into something much bigger.
The cruise line is teaming up with Casa de Campo Resort & Villas in a 50/50 venture through CTL Maritime, part of MSC Group, to redevelop the Dominican Republic destination into what it called a “premier leisure destination” for cruise and resort guests alike.

Catalina Island Will Not Be MSC-Exclusive
What makes this stand out is that Catalina Island isn’t being turned into an MSC-only stop.
MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests will be part of the plan, but the destination will still welcome other cruise lines as well, along with private clients from Casa de Campo. That gives the project more of an upscale shared-destination feel rather than a fully private-island setup.
What MSC Plans to Add
Catalina Island already has plenty going for it, with clear water, white-sand beaches, and coral reefs that have made it a popular beach day stop for years.
Under the new plan, guests can expect a much more polished visit. MSC said the upgrades will include a large open-air beach pavilion serving buffet meals, with international dishes and local favorites, plus a shaded dining area overlooking the sea. There will also be a tropical palapa bar for drinks and extra shaded seating.
New Water Sports and Upgraded Beach Comfort
The beach day itself is getting more attention too.
Plans call for a new water sports center with rental equipment, along with daybeds and cabanas for guests who want something a little more comfortable. On top of that, practical features like changing rooms, showers, and restrooms are all due for an upgrade.
In other words, MSC isn’t just adding pretty extras — it’s trying to make the whole stop feel better from start to finish.
Development Will Need to Respect the Island’s Natural Status
There’s also a clear environmental angle to the project.
Catalina Island is a Natural Monument in the Dominican Republic, and MSC said the work will be carried out under local environmental rules with the island’s natural setting in mind. That matters, because the last thing cruisers want is to see a beautiful beach stop lose the very thing that made it special in the first place.
La Romana Is Becoming More Important for MSC
The timing isn’t accidental either.
MSC Cruises is set to begin year-round sailings from La Romana, the mainland cruise gateway for nearby Catalina Island on the Dominican Republic’s southeastern coast, in November 2026, with MSC Opera offering weekly departures. Guests will be able to book a 7-night cruise or pair sailings into a 14-night “butterfly” itinerary, giving the line a much bigger foothold in the Southern Caribbean.

Catalina Island is clearly part of that wider push.
This Follows MSC’s New Sandy Cay Announcement
This announcement came just two days after MSC unveiled Sandy Cay in the Bahamas, another new beach destination that will serve both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests.
The difference is that Sandy Cay is being built as a private island retreat for those two brands, while Catalina Island will stay open to other cruise traffic too. Put the two announcements together, and it’s pretty clear MSC is putting serious effort into building more standout beach stops across the Caribbean.
There’s Still No Opening Timeline
One thing MSC did not share in its April 15 announcement was when the Catalina Island upgrades will be finished.
So for now, the plan is clear, but the timeline isn’t. Still, for cruisers sailing from La Romana, this could turn into one of the most interesting beach-day upgrades in the region.
