Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas faced an unexpected change of plans when their seven-night Bahamas cruise was completely rerouted less than 24 hours before departure.

The ship was scheduled to leave Cape Liberty, New Jersey, on October 18, 2026, for a weeklong voyage featuring stops in Port Canaveral, Florida, and two popular Bahamian destinations: Perfect Day at CocoCay and Nassau.

However, passengers were informed the evening before departure that severe weather along the East Coast would prevent the ship from following its original itinerary. Instead of heading south toward warmer weather, Oasis of the Seas would sail north to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in Canada.

The change eliminated all three originally scheduled ports, replacing them with a single Canadian destination and additional days at sea.

Severe Weather Forces Royal Caribbean to Cancel Three Ports

The decision to completely reroute Oasis of the Seas came as a powerful weather system developed off the southeastern United States, bringing concerns about strong winds, high waves, and potentially dangerous sailing conditions along the ship’s planned route.

In its notification to passengers, Royal Caribbean explained:

“The weather’s impact makes it hard to provide you with a safe and comfortable journey to Florida and the Bahamas.”

Rather than risk sailing through the affected region, the cruise line opted for a northern itinerary that would avoid the worst of the conditions.

The canceled ports included some of Royal Caribbean’s most popular destinations. Perfect Day at CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas, features beaches, water slides, and other attractions, while Port Canaveral provides access to Central Florida attractions. Nassau is also a popular stop for beach visits, sightseeing, and shore excursions.

The scene showcases colorful beach cabanas over turquoise waters, lush greenery, and a sandy beach filled with rows of lounge chairs. In the background, a water park with towering slides and a large cruise ship docked at the island are visible. A bright orange and pink hot air balloon adds a playful touch as it floats in the clear blue sky, completing the perfect tropical vacation setting.

The change meant a significant difference in the weather passengers could expect. While Florida and the Bahamas typically offer warm temperatures in October, Halifax experiences considerably cooler autumn conditions. Guests who had packed primarily for beaches and swimming pools could find themselves needing warmer clothing for their time ashore.

Although cruise lines regularly adjust itineraries to avoid severe weather, this change was particularly substantial because every originally scheduled destination was removed.

Halifax Stop Extended After Initial Overnight Schedule

The replacement itinerary initially offered passengers just one port of call during their seven-night cruise, with Oasis of the Seas scheduled to arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, and depart at 8 a.m. the following morning.

That would have given guests only 14 hours in port, with most of that time falling overnight. The limited schedule would have made it difficult for passengers to explore Halifax or participate in traditional daytime shore excursions.

However, Royal Caribbean subsequently secured an extension, allowing the ship to remain in Halifax until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21. The change increased the total port visit to 24 hours, giving guests an additional 10 hours and a full day to explore the Canadian city.

In a letter to passengers, Royal Caribbean explained:

“By continuing to work through our amended schedule, we’ve been able to secure additional flexibility for guests during our overnight stay.”

The cruise line added:

“We will now be able to extend our stay until 6:00 PM on Wednesday, October 21, offering a full day to explore Halifax.”

Passengers were informed of the revised schedule through an announcement from the ship’s captain, while the Royal Caribbean app was also updated to reflect the changes. Guests could book available shore excursions through the app or visit the onboard Shore Excursions Desk.

Halifax offers several attractions near the cruise terminal, including its waterfront, historic sites, museums, shops, and restaurants. The extended visit gives passengers a better opportunity to experience the destination despite the unexpected itinerary change.

Following its visit to Halifax, Oasis of the Seas is scheduled to spend the remainder of the voyage at sea before returning to Cape Liberty, New Jersey, on Sunday, October 25, as originally planned.

Royal Caribbean Offers Passengers Up to $600 Each Plus Future Cruise Credit

To compensate passengers for the significant itinerary change, Royal Caribbean is providing refundable onboard credit and a future cruise credit to guests aboard Oasis of the Seas.

The amount of onboard credit depends on the stateroom category booked, with the following compensation being offered:

  • Inside and ocean-view staterooms: $200 per guest for the first two guests.
  • Balcony staterooms: $300 per guest for the first two guests.
  • Suites: $600 per guest for the first two guests.
  • Third and additional guests: $100 per person, regardless of stateroom category.

The onboard credit can be used toward eligible purchases during the sailing, including specialty dining, drinks, spa treatments, and other onboard expenses. Any unused credit will be refunded to the payment card associated with the guest’s onboard account.

The deck features multiple pools, lounge chairs with bright yellow umbrellas, and a large, eye-catching water slide. Surrounded by stunning views of the ocean and lush mountains, the space offers a lively and family-friendly environment for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying outdoor entertainment.

In addition, passengers are receiving a future cruise credit worth 50% of the cruise fare paid per guest. Royal Caribbean expects to issue these credits by November 1, 2026, and guests must book another sailing by October 18, 2027, to take advantage of the offer.

Passengers who prepaid for Royal Caribbean shore excursions at the three canceled destinations will receive the amounts back as onboard credit, with any unused balance refunded to their payment card. Those who booked excursions independently may need to contact their tour operators regarding cancellations and possible refunds.

While the compensation provides some financial relief, passengers will still miss the destinations originally included in their cruise. The future cruise credit also requires guests to book another Royal Caribbean sailing to use it.

Last-Minute Change Raises Travel Document Concerns

The unexpected switch from the Bahamas to Canada also introduced potential travel documentation concerns for some passengers aboard Oasis of the Seas.

Because the itinerary was changed less than 24 hours before departure, guests had little time to check whether they met Canada’s entry requirements. Depending on their nationality and immigration status, some passengers may need additional documentation or a visa to enter Canada.

Royal Caribbean advised affected guests to review the applicable entry requirements. Depending on their nationality and documentation, some passengers could face restrictions on entering Canada, adding another complication to the unexpected itinerary change.

The cruise line also provided an itinerary-change letter that passengers may be able to use when submitting travel insurance claims. Whether the disruption qualifies for reimbursement will depend on the terms and coverage of each travel insurance policy.

Despite the substantial changes, passengers will complete their seven-night cruise with an entirely different destination and fewer port visits than originally advertised.
