Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas made an unscheduled return to PortMiami on Monday, 15th September, after an onboard altercation resulted in two passengers being taken to hospital.
When the ship arrived, emergency crews – including several police cars and ambulances – were waiting at the terminal. The guests received medical attention on board before being transferred to local hospitals for further care.
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed that “adult guests were involved in an altercation onboard” and stated that the cruise line is cooperating fully with investigators. No additional details have been released while the investigation is ongoing.

Conflicting Passenger Reports
Although Royal Caribbean described the incident as an “altercation,” passengers have shared very different accounts of what happened.
Some guests reported seeing part of the pool deck cordoned off, while others said the captain explained the early return to Miami as being due to a medical emergency.
On social media, several cruisers suggested that a guest had slipped near the pool and suffered a serious ankle injury. Others claimed there had been a fight in a public area, with one rumour alleging a violent attack.
The heavy police and ambulance presence waiting at the port only added to the uncertainty, sparking even more speculation about the true nature of the incident.

What We Know So Far
So far, only a few key details have been confirmed:
- Two adult guests were injured and taken to hospital.
- Wonder of the Seas returned to Miami ahead of schedule on Monday evening.
- Royal Caribbean is cooperating with local authorities as their investigation continues.
What exactly happened – whether it was an accident, a fight, or something else – has not been officially confirmed.
Wonder of the Seas is currently the world’s largest cruise ship and typically sails Caribbean itineraries from Miami.

Cruise Ship Fights Are On the Rise
While the details of the Wonder of the Seas incident remain unclear, reports of fights on cruise ships have been increasing in recent years – often linked to heavy drinking and crowded public spaces.
Videos of onboard brawls regularly surface on social media, showing groups of passengers in violent altercations, sometimes even hurling furniture.
Travel experts say several factors can raise the risk of trouble:
- Short weekend cruises and unlimited drink packages can lead to heavier alcohol consumption.
- Peak-season sailings, such as spring break or holiday cruises, may attract a rowdier crowd.
- Older, smaller, or lower-priced ships can sometimes draw passengers more prone to disruptive behaviour.
Cruisers looking to avoid such incidents can reduce their risk by choosing longer or off-peak sailings, booking newer and larger ships, and sticking to quieter areas late at night.
Cruise lines are also being urged to tighten their alcohol policies, increase security presence, and enforce tougher penalties – including lifetime bans – for serious offenders.
For most guests, cruise holidays remain safe and enjoyable, but the rise in reports highlights the need for cruise lines to balance fun with firm rules to maintain a positive onboard atmosphere.
