MSC Cruises Reveals Catalina Sugar Beach Ahead of November Opening

MSC Cruises has revealed more details about its new private destination in the Dominican Republic, with Catalina Sugar Beach set to welcome its first guests in November 2026.

The new destination is located on Catalina Island, near La Romana on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, around 60 miles east of Santo Domingo.

It is being developed in partnership with CTL Maritime and Casa de Campo Resort & Villas and will be open to guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.

The project was first announced and shared by Mad About Cruises in April 2026, giving the companies a relatively short development window before the first scheduled cruise visits later this year.

Catalina Sugar Beach Is Set to Open in November 2026

Catalina Sugar Beach is being developed as a new private beach destination for MSC Group guests visiting the Dominican Republic.

The site sits on Catalina Island, just offshore from La Romana, one of the country’s main cruise destinations.

Its first guests are expected to arrive in November 2026, with both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys scheduled to include the destination on future itineraries.

Guests staying at Casa de Campo Resort & Villas will also be able to access the property.

The Destination Will Focus on the Island’s Natural Setting

Catalina Island is designated as a protected natural monument in the Dominican Republic, so the development is being planned around the island’s existing landscape.

The area is known for its white-sand beaches and clear blue water, and the project is intended to add guest facilities while preserving the natural surroundings.

MSC Cruises says the destination will combine the beach setting with higher-end amenities aimed at giving visitors a more comfortable day ashore.

Dining, Bars, Cabanas, and Water Sports

Food will be served from a beachfront, open-sided pavilion overlooking the water.

Instead of sticking to typical beach-day fare, the menu is expected to include dishes from around the world alongside local specialties.

Two nearby bars will give guests additional places to grab a drink while staying close to the beach. Covered seating beneath palapa-style roofing will provide shade while keeping the setting open to the sea.

Visitors who want to spend more time on the water will be able to rent equipment for aquatic activities.

For a slower-paced day, daybeds and cabanas will also be available to rent.

A Pathway Will Help Guests Explore the Island

The beach won’t be the only part of Catalina Sugar Beach guests can explore.

A walking route will pass through parts of the island’s natural surroundings, with scenic viewpoints along the way.

As people walk along the path, there will be informational signs placed along the way. These signs will explain things about the area, and visitors can read them while exploring, without needing a guide or following a strict schedule.

Shore Excursions Will Explore More of the Area

Guests who want to see more beyond Catalina Sugar Beach will also have a range of shore excursions available.

Options will include catamaran trips around the surrounding waters and snorkeling excursions focused on the marine life around Catalina Island.

Passengers will also be able to take boat trips to Isla Saona or head inland to visit nearby attractions including the Cave of Wonders and Altos de Chavón.

These excursions give guests the option to turn a beach day into a wider look at the Dominican Republic, whether they’re more interested in the water, nature, or local sights.

MSC Group’s Second Private Caribbean Destination

Catalina Sugar Beach will give MSC Group another dedicated destination in the Caribbean.

Its existing private destination, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, is located in the Bahamas and has become a popular stop for MSC Cruises guests.

Both locations place an emphasis on protecting their natural surroundings, although Catalina Sugar Beach will offer its own mix of beach facilities, dining, water sports, and areas for relaxation.

Which Cruise Ships Will Visit Catalina Sugar Beach?

The new destination will not be limited to one MSC Cruises ship.

Guests sailing on vessels operated across MSC Group will have the opportunity to visit, including passengers traveling with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.

The property will also be available to guests staying at Casa de Campo Resort & Villas.

MSC Opera Will Visit on Every La Romana Sailing

MSC Opera is scheduled to become the first cruise ship to bring passengers to Catalina Sugar Beach.

The 2,150-passenger Lirica-class vessel will begin sailing from La Romana in November 2026, operating seven-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries.

The MSC Opera cruise ship is captured cruising the open sea, featuring its distinctive navy blue and white exterior, multiple decks with lifeboats, and a sleek design, set against a backdrop of clear skies and calm waters.

Catalina Sugar Beach is currently included on each of those sailings.

The first visit is planned for Tuesday, November 17, 2026, when MSC Opera is scheduled to be at the destination from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.

That call comes one day after the ship departs La Romana on November 16. Catalina Sugar Beach will be the first stop on the itinerary, which also includes Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and the British Virgin Islands.

Explora III Will Arrive Two Days Later

Explora Journeys is expected to make its first visit shortly afterward.

Explora III is scheduled to call at Catalina Sugar Beach on Thursday, November 19, 2026, becoming the first Explora Journeys ship to visit.

Its stay is currently scheduled from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

MSC Group Is Expanding Its Caribbean Footprint

Catalina Sugar Beach is about more than adding another beach stop to an itinerary. It gives MSC Group a second private destination in the Caribbean, alongside Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in the Bahamas.

The opening also comes as MSC Cruises strengthens its presence in the Dominican Republic, with MSC Opera beginning sailings from La Romana and visiting Catalina Sugar Beach on every scheduled itinerary.

With both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys set to call there, the new destination will become another part of MSC Group’s wider Caribbean offering, giving the company more control over the experiences guests have ashore while expanding the number of dedicated destinations available across its brands.
