Passengers on a small cruise ship in Fiji got far more drama than expected after the Fiji Princess ran aground on a coral reef near Monuriki Island, the same island made famous by Tom Hanks’ 2000 movie Cast Away. The incident happened in the early hours of April 4, 2026, while the ship was sailing a 7-day itinerary through Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands.

All Passengers Were Safely Evacuated

Blue Lagoon Cruises said the ship had been anchored in calm conditions, but a sudden severe squall appears to have dragged the anchor toward a nearby reef, leaving the vessel stuck. An investigation is still in its early stages, but weather has already emerged as a key part of the story.

Around 30 passengers were on board at the time, along with crew members. Reports vary slightly on the total crew count, but authorities said all passengers were safely taken off the ship and transported back to Port Denarau, along with a number of non-essential crew. No injuries were reported.

That’s the good news.

The more worrying part is the damage left behind. Officials said the Fiji Princess suffered serious damage to its rear left side, including the steering area, with part of the underside also affected. Reports also said the vessel experienced engine failure and started taking on water after the grounding.

Recovery Efforts Are Focused on Preventing Environmental Damage

Right now, the biggest concern isn’t just getting the ship off the reef. It’s protecting the surrounding marine environment.

Authorities said the vessel was carrying about 23,000 liters of diesel fuel, or roughly 5,300 gallons. So far, inspections have found no sign that the fuel tanks were damaged, which is a huge relief given the ship is stuck in a reef system in one of Fiji’s best-known island groups. Crews have already been removing pumpable fuel and other oils as a precaution.

Salvage efforts are being coordinated between Blue Lagoon Cruises, maritime officials, the Fiji Navy, and a marine recovery specialist brought in from Australia. But the weather still isn’t making life easy. Rough seas and strong waves have delayed underwater inspections and made it unsafe to deploy some equipment.

Why This Story Is Getting So Much Attention

This would be a major cruise story anywhere, but the location has made it even more eye-catching.

Monuriki Island is widely known as the filming location for Cast Away, and it’s one of Fiji’s most recognizable tourist spots. The uninhabited island sits about 45 kilometers west of Nadi and is known for its beaches, reefs, and clear lagoons. So when a cruise ship ends up stranded there, it’s the kind of headline that instantly grabs attention.

For now, the Fiji Princess remains grounded while teams wait for conditions to improve and continue working on the safest way to recover the vessel.
