Carnival Breeze had an unexpected bump while arriving in Cozumel, Mexico, on Monday, August 31, 2026.
The Carnival Cruise Line ship was being guided into its berth at around 9 a.m. when the starboard side of the vessel came into contact with the corner of the pier.
Carnival Jubilee was docked nearby at an adjacent berth at the time, but there was no collision between the two ships.
Images shared after the incident show a noticeable area of scraped paint along Carnival Breeze’s hull. The damage can be seen on the starboard side, between two sets of access doors.
Video footage circulating online also captured the moment of contact, including a loud noise as the ship reached the pier. Another angle appears to show Carnival Breeze approaching the berth at an angle before the impact.
Exactly what caused the incident hasn’t been confirmed.
There were no reported injuries, and passengers commenting online said the incident was barely noticeable from onboard. Some said they didn’t feel the impact at all, while others reported no disruption following the contact.
Despite the visible scrapes, there was no immediate indication that the incident would prevent Carnival Breeze from continuing its cruise.
Carnival Breeze Continues Its Cruise as Planned
Despite the contact with the pier, Carnival Breeze was able to continue its five-night Western Caribbean cruise without any reported changes to the itinerary.
The ship remained in Cozumel for its planned port visit and departed at around 5 p.m., as scheduled.
The cruise had left Galveston, Texas, on Saturday, August 29, followed by a full day at sea on Sunday. Cozumel was the first scheduled stop of the sailing.
After leaving Mexico’s popular island port, Carnival Breeze was due to visit Progreso on Tuesday, September 1, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Another sea day would follow before the ship returned to Galveston on Thursday, September 3.
At the time of the incident, there were no confirmed reports of damage to the pier or any indication that other cruise ships using the port would have their schedules disrupted.
Photos showed scraped paint and damage along the starboard side of the hull, although the full extent of the damage had not been publicly confirmed.
Most importantly for those onboard, the ship’s on-time departure from Cozumel meant the cruise could continue as planned.
Cruise Ships Have Hit Piers Before
Incidents like this don’t happen every day, but Carnival Breeze certainly isn’t the first cruise ship to make unwanted contact with a pier.
Docking a vessel of this size can be affected by a number of conditions, including wind, currents, and swell. However, there has been no confirmation that any of those factors played a role in what happened in Cozumel.
There have been several similar incidents in recent years.
In September 2025, Miray Cruises’ MV Gemini made contact with a pier while arriving in Piraeus, Greece, causing damage to the ship.
Carnival has experienced pier incidents before, too. Carnival Magic, which belongs to the same Dream class as Carnival Breeze, struck a pier in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on February 6, 2024, during poor weather conditions.
Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas also hit a dock in Falmouth, Jamaica, on May 26, 2022. That incident was later attributed to pilot error.
Going back a little further, Norwegian Escape struck a pier in Civitavecchia, Italy, in December 2020. Carnival Horizon made contact with Pier 90 in Manhattan in August 2018, while Disney Dream hit a pier in Nassau, Bahamas, in September 2017.
After an incident like this, a cruise ship can be inspected to check for structural damage and make sure it’s safe to continue sailing.
In Carnival Breeze’s case, the ship was able to leave Cozumel on schedule and continue with its planned itinerary.
