Cruise Lines Alter Alaska Itineraries Over Tracy Arm Fjord Safety Concerns

Several cruise lines are quietly dropping Tracy Arm Fjord from Alaska itineraries and replacing it with Endicott Arm instead — a change that could catch some passengers off guard.

It may sound like a simple swap, but it points to a bigger problem in one of Alaska’s best-known glacier routes.

Which Cruise Lines Have Made The Switch?

The clearest 2026 changes so far involve Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Virgin Voyages, and now Royal Caribbean.

Holland America has already made the change across its 2026 departures tied to Tracy Arm, with notices on its excursion pages stating that unstable ice and geological conditions mean ships will visit Endicott Arm instead. That affects ships including Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, and Zaandam on relevant Alaska sailings.

Carnival has also removed Tracy Arm from its 2026 Alaska itineraries and shifted scenic cruising days to Endicott Arm. The change shows up across sailings on ships such as Carnival Spirit, Carnival Miracle, and Carnival Luminosa, which are central to Carnival’s Alaska program. That’s a pretty big move because Alaska glacier viewing days are often one of the biggest selling points on these sailings.

Virgin Voyages is doing the same for Brilliant Lady’s first Alaska season in 2026. Guests on affected sailings have been told the ship will visit Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier instead of Tracy Arm Fjord.

Royal Caribbean has now made similar changes across dozens of 2026 Alaska sailings. The line has adjusted itineraries on Serenade of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas, replacing Tracy Arm Fjord with Endicott Arm because of the August 2025 landslide and ongoing navigation safety concerns.

There’s also an earlier example from Cunard. In September 2025, Queen Elizabeth diverted from Tracy Arm to Endicott Arm after the landslide risk became impossible to ignore.

Why Tracy Arm Became A Problem

This all comes back to what happened on August 10, 2025.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a landslide above the toe of South Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm collapsed into the water and triggered a tsunami. No injuries were reported, but the event changed the conversation around access to the fjord.

The landslide also pushed a significant amount of debris into the fjord, creating navigation concerns for ships and raising fears that additional landslides could follow.

The concern is no longer just routine navigational difficulty. After the August 2025 landslide and tsunami, cruise lines are treating Tracy Arm as an area with unstable conditions that could increase the risk of another landslide.

Holland America has reflected that in its own wording, saying unstable ice and geological conditions currently preclude vessels from entering Tracy Arm Fjord.

Why Endicott Arm Is The Usual Backup

Endicott Arm is the natural alternative because it sits close to Tracy Arm in the same wilderness area south of Juneau. Ships still get the steep cliffs, waterfalls, floating ice, and glacier scenery passengers expect from this part of Alaska.

The main difference is the glacier at the end. Tracy Arm is known for the Sawyer Glaciers, while Endicott Arm leads to Dawes Glacier.

That is still a strong substitute. Dawes Glacier is a tidewater glacier, so passengers can still get the classic Alaska experience of ice meeting the sea, along with calving and iceberg-filled water when conditions allow.

Will Passengers Feel Shortchanged?

Some will, especially if Tracy Arm was one of the main reasons they booked.

That comes down to expectation. If you booked specifically for the Sawyer Glaciers, it is a meaningful change. If you booked for a dramatic glacier day in Southeast Alaska, Endicott Arm still delivers a similar type of experience.

It is also worth noting that Tracy Arm has always been a scenic cruising day rather than a port where passengers go ashore. The change affects the glacier-viewing experience, not a missed land visit.

That is also why this matters beyond one cruise line. It shows how quickly Alaska itineraries can change when conditions shift.

Could More Cruise Lines Follow?

That would not be surprising.

Some lines, including Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Seabourn, and Oceania Cruises, are still marketing Tracy Arm on parts of their Alaska programs, and some sailings may keep it where conditions allow. But the broader pattern is clear: once lines decide the risk profile has changed, they tend to favor the safer scenic alternative rather than wait for another close call.

Tracy Arm has become harder to rely on, while Endicott Arm is emerging as the preferred replacement for lines that still want to offer a glacier-viewing day.

For passengers, the lesson is simple: if Tracy Arm is the make-or-break reason for booking an Alaska cruise, check the latest itinerary details carefully and watch for pre-cruise updates. What is listed at booking may not be what you sail.

The Real Story Isn’t That Alaska Got Less Impressive

It is easy to read these changes and assume cruise lines are watering down Alaska itineraries.

That is not really what this looks like.

This looks more like the industry adjusting to a fjord that became harder to enter after a major geological event. Endicott Arm may be the lesser-known name, but it is becoming the route cruise lines trust.
