A woman has died after reportedly falling from a balcony aboard Carnival Firenze while the ship was near Catalina Island, California.

The incident happened on the morning of Monday, April 27, during a short Baja Mexico sailing from Long Beach. According to local reports, the guest went over the balcony of her stateroom and landed on a deck below.
She was traveling with family, who alerted the ship’s crew after the incident. Her identity has not been publicly released.
It’s a heartbreaking situation, and at this stage, officials have not said what caused the fall.
Carnival Says Authorities Were Notified
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that the proper authorities were contacted after the guest’s death.
The cruise line also said its Care Team is supporting the woman’s family. These teams are typically brought in after serious onboard incidents to help relatives with support, communication, and next steps during an incredibly difficult time.
Carnival said law enforcement was expected to board Carnival Firenze while the ship was at Catalina Island to carry out the required investigation.
The cruise line has not released further details about what happened before the fall.
FBI Is Assisting With the Investigation
Law enforcement boarded Carnival Firenze while the ship was at Catalina Island, and CBS Los Angeles reported that the FBI is assisting with the death investigation.
That doesn’t mean officials have reached any conclusion about what happened. At the time of writing, the circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear.
No cause has been confirmed, and the woman’s name has not been made public.
In cases like this, investigators usually look at several factors, including where the incident happened, witness accounts, ship security footage, and the ship’s location at the time.
For now, there are more questions than answers.
The Ship Was on a Short Baja Mexico Sailing
Carnival Firenze had departed from Long Beach on Sunday, April 26, for a four-day Baja Mexico cruise.
The ship’s first port of call was Catalina Island on Monday, April 27. Carnival’s itinerary listed the ship as scheduled to be there from 8:00 AM until 5:30 PM before continuing toward Ensenada, Mexico.
Ensenada was scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, followed by a day at sea. The cruise is due to return to Long Beach on Thursday, April 30.
Short Baja sailings from Southern California are popular with Carnival guests because they offer a quick getaway without needing a full week off work. Catalina and Ensenada are two of the most common stops on these routes.
About Carnival Firenze

Carnival Firenze is one of Carnival Cruise Line’s newer ships, though the vessel itself began life with sister brand Costa Cruises.
The ship joined Carnival’s fleet in 2024 after previously sailing as Costa Firenze. Carnival now markets the ship under its “Fun Italian Style” concept, which brings Italian-themed restaurants, bars, decor, and onboard spaces into the usual Carnival experience.
Carnival Firenze is a large ship, measuring 135,156 gross tons. Carnival lists the ship with a double-occupancy guest capacity of 4,126 and 1,425 team members.
The ship sails from Long Beach and is used for shorter West Coast itineraries.
What Has Not Been Confirmed
Officials have not confirmed how the woman went over the balcony.
Her identity has not been released, and Carnival has not shared any further details about the moments leading up to the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and more information may be released by authorities later.
For now, Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family, while law enforcement continues to investigate what happened aboard Carnival Firenze.
