A Carnival cruise guest has died following a tragic pier incident at Celebration Key in The Bahamas.
The guest, reported to be an 88-year-old American woman, was sailing aboard Carnival Celebration when the incident happened on Saturday, May 9, 2026. She was using a mobility scooter on the pier when the scooter went off the dock and into the water.

Carnival has confirmed that its team responded and was able to retrieve the woman from the water. Resuscitation efforts were made, but she did not survive.
The incident took place during the final full day of Carnival Celebration’s 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing from PortMiami.
What Happened at Celebration Key
The incident happened while Carnival Celebration was docked at Celebration Key, Carnival Cruise Line’s private destination on Grand Bahama.
The ship had arrived earlier that morning, and the incident was reported around midday. It isn’t yet clear whether the woman was heading ashore or returning to the ship when the scooter went off the pier.
According to early reports, the guest lost control of the mobility scooter before it went off the pier. Officials have not yet confirmed what caused her to lose control.
The woman and the scooter both entered the water. Emergency teams responded, and she was brought back onboard the ship, which was the nearest place for medical care.
Carnival later said the guest did not survive resuscitation attempts. The Royal Bahamian Police Department and coroner’s office are now handling the case.
No further personal details have been released, which is understandable given the family’s privacy.
Cause of Death Has Not Been Confirmed
Authorities have not yet confirmed the woman’s exact cause of death.
An autopsy is expected, and the investigation is still active. At this stage, it has not been confirmed whether the woman died from drowning, injuries from the fall, a medical issue, or another factor.
Local investigators are reportedly looking at whether the guest may have struck her head on the side of the ship during the fall, but officials have not confirmed whether that contributed to her death.
Guests Reported Confusion After the Incident
Several passengers discussed the aftermath online, including in a Reddit thread where guests shared what they believed they had seen or heard onboard. Some said there were public announcements over the ship’s speaker system, while others described seeing emergency activity on or near the pier.

According to those passenger accounts, CPR was performed on at least one guest after the incident. Some commenters also suggested another traveler may have entered the water during the response, possibly in an attempt to help.
Those details have not been officially confirmed, so they should be treated carefully. Reddit posts can show how confusing and upsetting the scene felt for passengers, but they are not the same as findings from investigators.
Carnival Glory was reportedly also visiting Celebration Key at the time, meaning guests from both ships may have seen parts of the emergency response.
Reports also said local crime scene investigators later arrived at the pier, and a diver recovered the mobility scooter from the water.
Celebration Key Has Seen Other Guest Deaths
Celebration Key only opened to Carnival guests in July 2025, but this is not the first fatal incident reported at the destination.
In August 2025, two Carnival guests died in separate water emergencies during visits to Celebration Key. The deaths happened on August 15, 2025, in unrelated incidents involving guests from different Carnival ships.
One incident reportedly happened off the beach, while the other took place in the island’s lagoon. Both were described as drowning incidents, although officials were also looking into whether medical conditions may have contributed.

Celebration Key was built as a major new stop for Carnival, with beaches, pools, dining areas, and a pier designed to handle large ships. Like any busy cruise destination, it serves thousands of guests on port days.
Carnival Celebration Returned to Miami
Carnival Celebration continued its sailing after the incident and returned to Miami on Sunday, May 10, as scheduled.
For the woman’s family and traveling party, the return would have been heartbreaking. For other guests onboard, the final day of the cruise likely felt very different after such a serious emergency.
For now, the case remains under investigation by Bahamian authorities. Our thoughts are with the guest’s family, friends, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident.
