How Royal Caribbean Turns Seawater Into Clean Drinking Water

Have you ever wondered how cruise ships never run out of water, no matter where they sail or how many people are on board?

Royal Caribbean has figured it out! They’ve mastered the trick of keeping water flowing for taps, showers, swimming pools, and even water slides, all day and night. It’s amazing, especially when you realise their biggest ship, Icon of the Seas, can hold almost 10,000 people and has six water slides and an indoor diving arena. So, how do they do it?

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas cruise ship sails gracefully at dusk, with the glow of the setting sun casting a warm light on its sleek, white structure. The ship's impressive size and modern design, featuring a unique glass dome, are set against a backdrop of distant mountains and a pastel sky.

Turning Ocean Water into Drinking Water

Believe it or not, the water you drink on board starts as seawater. Don’t worry, though—it doesn’t taste salty! Royal Caribbean uses smart technology to turn ocean water into clean, safe drinking water.

Nick Rose, an environmental expert at Royal Caribbean, says:

“Water is as important to a ship as fuel. We’ve found some really creative ways to conserve and reuse it.”

In fact, over 90% of the water used on their ships and private islands, like CocoCay, is made right on board. They do this with two main methods: steam evaporation and reverse osmosis.

How It Works

  1. Steam Evaporation:
This process uses heat from the ship’s engines to boil seawater. When the water turns to steam, it leaves the salt and other impurities behind. The steam is then cooled and condensed into clean, distilled water. This water is incredibly pure and can be used for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. The leftover salt is often discarded safely back into the ocean or managed according to environmental guidelines.
  2. Reverse Osmosis:
This method pushes seawater through super tiny filters, also known as membranes, that only let clean water molecules pass through. These membranes are so fine that they block not just salt, but also other contaminants and microscopic particles. After the water is filtered, minerals are added back in to improve taste and meet U.S. health standards. Reverse osmosis is energy-efficient and ideal for producing large quantities of fresh water on board.

Smart Ways to Save Water

Royal Caribbean doesn’t just make water; they also save it. One way is by adding air to shower heads and taps. This keeps water pressure strong but uses less water. Nick Rose says, “We use air instead of just water to make showers feel great while saving water. It’s a win-win!”

Even the ship’s laundry is eco-friendly. They collect water from air-conditioning systems and reuse it to wash clothes and bedding. These smart ideas help save water without taking away from the experience.

Protecting the Planet

Royal Caribbean’s efforts to save water are part of a bigger plan to help the environment. By using cool technology and clever ideas, they show that cruising can be both fun and eco-friendly.

So, next time you sip water on a Royal Caribbean ship or take a dip in the pool, remember the amazing journey it took from the sea to you!
