7 Things Royal Caribbean Does Better Than Other Cruise Lines

When it comes to planning a vacation, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. Narrow it down to cruising, and there’s still a huge variety to choose from—from small, intimate ships to massive floating resorts.

For me, though, Royal Caribbean always stands out as a cruise line that checks all the boxes. Having sailed with Royal Caribbean many times, I’ve seen firsthand why they’re consistently rated one of the best cruise lines.

To get a broader perspective, I even asked people on my Facebook page what they thought, and so many of their comments echoed my own experiences. So, here are seven things Royal Caribbean does better than any other cruise line.

1. Broadway-Caliber Shows at Sea

Royal Caribbean knows how to put on a show—and I mean a real show. They’re one of the only cruise lines to offer full-length Broadway productions onboard, and they do it with such finesse that you’d think you were sitting in a theater on the Great White Way. Hits like Mamma Mia!, Grease, We Will Rock You, and Hairspray have all graced their stages. These aren’t shortened versions or cruise-style adaptations—they’re the real deal, with world-class performers, intricate sets, and dazzling costumes.

And here’s the kicker: all of these shows are included in your cruise fare. You could easily enjoy a different jaw-dropping production every night of your vacation, making Royal Caribbean a true leader in entertainment at sea.

When I asked people on my Facebook page about their favourite part of Royal Caribbean, the Broadway-style shows came up again and again. One person said, “I’ve seen Grease both on Broadway and on Royal Caribbean, and honestly, the ship’s performance was just as impressive!” Another mentioned how these productions make every evening onboard feel like a special occasion.

2. Onboard Thrills and Unique Entertainment Venues

Beyond the Broadway-style shows, Royal Caribbean sets itself apart with some of the most exciting and unique entertainment options you’ll find at sea. These experiences are designed to wow guests of all ages and make every moment onboard unforgettable.

The AquaTheater, for example, is a true marvel. Found on Oasis- and Icon-class ships, this open-air venue hosts jaw-dropping performances with synchronized swimming, daring high-diving stunts, and acrobatics, all set against the backdrop of the ocean. Watching a show here feels like being at a world-class event, except you’re on a cruise ship.

Another standout is the ice-skating shows, which combine breathtaking artistry with incredible athleticism. There’s something magical about seeing skaters perform daring stunts on a rink in the middle of the ocean. It’s one of those “only on Royal Caribbean” experiences that people talk about long after their cruise.

Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships add even more thrills with SeaPlex, a massive indoor space where you can try activities like bumper cars, roller skating, and even circus school. For the adrenaline junkies, the FlowRider surf simulators let you catch waves without leaving the ship, while the Oasis-class zip lines offer a thrilling ride across the open decks.

These unique entertainment venues and activities make Royal Caribbean a leader in onboard thrills. Whether you’re seeking high-energy fun or jaw-dropping performances, there’s always something to keep you amazed and entertained.

3. Specialty Dining That Stands Out

When it comes to dining, Royal Caribbean really sets itself apart with its specialty restaurants. Their ships are packed with high-quality dining options that cater to just about every craving you could imagine. Let me tell you, the variety and creativity onboard are seriously impressive.

One of my absolute favorites is Wonderland, a whimsical restaurant inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The dishes are like works of art, and you never quite know what surprise is coming next.

Another standout is Chops Grille, a classic steakhouse where you can count on consistently excellent meals. And if you’re a fan of sushi or teppanyaki, Izumi is the place to be. The flavours are fresh, bold, and downright delicious. For a more intimate vibe, there’s 150 Central Park, which offers a refined atmosphere and perfectly crafted dishes that make any night feel special.

Even Royal Caribbean’s smaller and older ships don’t skimp on the dining experience. They’ll still have at least a couple of specialty options to choose from, ensuring you’ll always have something amazing to look forward to.

4. Itinerary Variety Across the Globe

Royal Caribbean offers an incredible range of itineraries, making it the ideal choice for cruisers eager to explore more than the usual destinations. While many think of the Caribbean and the Bahamas, Royal Caribbean goes far beyond, delivering global adventures few other cruise lines can rival.

Their ships sail to fascinating destinations like the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Asia, the South Pacific, and even the Arabian Gulf. Imagine sipping wine in Italy, marvelling at glaciers in Alaska, or hiking through the stunning landscapes of New Zealand—Royal Caribbean makes it all possible.

What’s even better? They have multiple ships deployed in each region, giving you plenty of options to match your travel plans. Whether you’re after a quick getaway or that bucket-list adventure you’ve been dreaming about, Royal Caribbean has you covered. If unique, far-flung destinations are calling your name, this cruise line is hard to beat.

5. Private Island Excellence

This image captures the vibrant and exciting atmosphere of Perfect Day at CocoCay, a private island resort. The scene showcases colorful beach cabanas over turquoise waters, lush greenery, and a sandy beach filled with rows of lounge chairs. In the background, a water park with towering slides and a large cruise ship docked at the island are visible. A bright orange and pink hot air balloon adds a playful touch as it floats in the clear blue sky, completing the perfect tropical vacation setting.

Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay is not your typical private island experience. Located in the Bahamas, this place has something for everyone and honestly redefines what a private island can offer.

If you’re a thrill-seeker, the Thrill Waterpark will blow you away with one of the tallest waterslides in North America. It’s the kind of thing you’ll be talking about long after your trip.

Prefer to take it easy? The Oasis Lagoon, which is the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, is perfect for lounging with a drink in hand. And speaking of drinks, you’ll be happy to know that Royal Caribbean’s drink packages work here, so you can sip your favourite cocktails without worrying about extra costs.

For those wanting a touch of luxury, the Exclusive Beach Club is a dream come true. With infinity pools and private cabanas, it’s like stepping into your own little paradise. And, of course, there are multiple beautiful beaches where you can snorkel, kayak, or just relax.

Unlike other cruise lines’ private destinations, CocoCay is packed with features that make it feel like an extension of your cruise rather than just a quick stop.

6. Cutting-Edge Ship Design and Innovation

When it comes to ship design, Royal Caribbean is in a league of its own. Every ship in their fleet is an engineering marvel, the result of years of research and innovative thinking. They’re constantly pushing the envelope of what a cruise ship can be. From their very first ships to their newest additions, Royal Caribbean’s goal has always been to dream big and deliver even bigger.

Take the Icon of the Seas, for example. This groundbreaking ship is setting new records in both size and innovation. It features the AquaDome, an awe-inspiring space that combines panoramic ocean views with incredible dining and entertainment experiences.

Then there’s the Ultimate Abyss, the tallest slide at sea, offering a nine-story plunge that’s as thrilling as it sounds. And let’s not forget the North Star, an observation capsule that holds the Guinness World Record for the highest viewing deck on a cruise ship, giving guests 360-degree views from over 300 feet above sea level.

Royal Caribbean doesn’t stop there. Their fleet includes features like the Bionic Bar, where robotic bartenders serve up custom cocktails with precision, and Two70, a multi-purpose venue with floor-to-ceiling windows that transform into a stage for immersive, high-tech entertainment complete with aerialists and dancing robotic screens.

It’s clear that Royal Caribbean doesn’t just build ships; they create floating destinations that are as much a part of the vacation experience as the ports you visit.

7. Sustainability Initiatives

Royal Caribbean is not just about creating unforgettable vacations—they’re also committed to protecting the environment and making cruising cleaner and greener. One of their standout efforts is the Save the Waves program, which began back in 1992 as an onboard recycling initiative and has since evolved into a company-wide philosophy. This program guides their mission to manage waste responsibly and implement sustainable practices fleet-wide.

A big part of their commitment involves reducing single-use plastics. Over the past several years, they’ve eliminated 60% of these items, including plastic straws, stirrers, and condiment packets. It’s a small but meaningful change that reflects their focus on reducing their environmental footprint.

Their dedication doesn’t stop there. Royal Caribbean has embraced advanced technologies like air lubrication systems, which coat their ships’ hulls with millions of tiny bubbles. This creates a smoother ride that uses less energy, cutting down on fuel consumption. They’ve also integrated energy-saving measures onboard, such as LED lighting and tinted windows, which work together to conserve energy while maintaining the comfort and luxury guests expect.

Even their private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, plays a role in their sustainability efforts. A water specialist oversees advanced desalination and wastewater treatment systems on the island, ensuring that treated water is repurposed to irrigate its lush landscaping. It’s just one example of how Royal Caribbean incorporates eco-conscious practices into every aspect of their operations.

And then there’s the Icon of the Seas, which showcases the company’s forward-thinking approach. Powered by LNG (liquefied natural gas), one of the cleanest fuels available, this ship represents a significant step toward a greener future in cruising. With innovative technologies and a commitment to ongoing improvements, Royal Caribbean is setting the bar for sustainable travel at sea.

Final Word

Royal Caribbean truly stands out as a cruise line that delivers unforgettable experiences, cutting-edge innovation, and world-class service. Whether it’s the thrilling entertainment, jaw-dropping ship design, or eco-conscious practices, they consistently push boundaries to offer something for everyone. Their dedication to creating unique, seamless, and exciting vacations is why so many cruisers, including myself, keep coming back.

That said, I know Royal Caribbean isn’t going to be for everyone. If you’re looking for a super small ship or a completely laid-back vibe with minimal activities, there are other cruise lines better suited for that. But if you want a cruise experience that blends excitement, relaxation, and an endless lineup of things to do, this is it.
