The Rescue at Sea

On the night of October 22, 2025, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic diverted from its route after spotting a small, overcrowded sailboat drifting in the Mediterranean. The ship, carrying more than 4,000 passengers on an 11-night voyage from Rome to the Greek Isles and Italy, was only a day into its journey when the emergency unfolded.

According to one guest posting on Reddit, “We had to stop in the middle of the Med and rescue 67 migrants that were in a 30-foot sailboat.” Passengers reported that the rescue operation lasted several hours as crew members carefully brought everyone aboard, ensuring each person received immediate attention and safety checks.

Cruise Ship Heroes

Cruise ship crews are trained for all kinds of emergencies, and this was no exception. The Epic’s team acted swiftly to provide food, water, medical care, and security screenings for the 67 rescued individuals. The refugees were kept in a separate area of the ship to ensure both their comfort and the safety of paying guests.

Under maritime law, ships are required to assist anyone in distress at sea under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention, an international obligation that Norwegian Cruise Line, like all operators, takes seriously. In this case, it wasn’t just a rule followed; it was an act of humanity carried out with professionalism and compassion.

Itinerary Changes After the Rescue

Because of the unplanned detour, Norwegian Epic had to cancel its first scheduled port call in Santorini. Many guests expressed disappointment, with one passenger writing, “I’m really bummed, this is my second time trying to get to Santorini.” However, most agreed that the crew’s actions were the right thing to do.

Instead of heading to Santorini, the ship was directed to a port on mainland Greece, where authorities could safely take custody of the refugees. The handover took place smoothly, and once completed, the ship resumed its journey toward Athens.

Why Ignoring a Distress Call Isn’t an Option at Sea

Some online commenters questioned whether cruise ships should get involved in rescuing migrants at all, especially when it disrupts a voyage. But under international maritime law, not saving people in distress at sea isn’t an option.

Every vessel, from cargo ships to luxury liners, operates under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention. It’s a global agreement dating back to 1914 that legally obligates captains to assist anyone in danger on the water, regardless of nationality or circumstance. Failing to do so can lead to severe penalties and, more importantly, goes against centuries of seafaring ethics.

Cruise lines are also guided by the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), which reinforces that all mariners must help those in peril if it can be done safely.

In practice, that means when a ship like Norwegian Epic encounters a small, overcrowded vessel or receives a distress call, it must respond. The priority becomes stabilizing the situation, providing medical aid, and coordinating with the nearest authorities to arrange safe transfer.

In short, there is no “look the other way” option at sea. For the captain and crew, saving lives isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the law.

Norwegian Epic’s Journey Continues

After the diversion, Norwegian Epic continued on its planned itinerary with minimal disruption. The ship is scheduled to call in Athens, Mykonos, Valletta, Syracuse, Salerno, Livorno, and Cannes before returning to Rome on November 1, 2025.

Passengers may have lost a day in Santorini, but the cruise community widely praised the captain and crew for their quick response and calm handling of a challenging situation at sea.
