Deb thought it was just another workday in Brisbane. She was sitting at her desk when her partner Matt walked in unexpectedly. Within minutes, she was blindfolded, led out of the office, and told she was coming with him.
“I was blindfolded, he put me in a car and then drove me around for about 45 minutes,” Deb recalled. “I had no idea where I was.”
She tried to guess – maybe the airport? But as the drive continued, she stayed completely disoriented. At one point, strangers even cheered them on as Matt carefully walked her through a building, still unable to see where she was.
Finally, the blindfold came off. Instead of her office or the airport, Deb found herself standing at the cruise terminal. Matt had arranged everything — her boss was in on it, her workplace covered, and now they were about to set sail on a surprise four-night cruise aboard P&O’s Pacific Dawn (now the Ambassador Ambience).

But the surprises weren’t over.
Matt told Deb not to expect a proposal, insisting it was “just a Valentine’s weekend cruise.” She believed him until the first evening at sea. As the sun set over Brisbane, he asked her to show him around the ship. They stopped on deck 11, where the sky turned gold and the city slipped away behind them.
With friends secretly ready to capture the moment, Matt got down on one knee. Deb was so shocked she couldn’t stop saying “oh my God”, but of course, she said yes. Passengers nearby cheered as the couple celebrated with champagne and photos against the backdrop of the Gateway Bridge.
The story has since been shared by Deb & Matt on their YouTube channel, where they reflect on the “best workday ever” and the moment that made cruising such a big part of their life together.
