Formal nights are still very much a thing on Carnival cruises, even if not everyone’s excited about them.
Most sailings will include at least one, and while it’s designed to feel a bit more special, it helps to know what to expect. How formal is formal? What’s the vibe? And do you really need to pack a cocktail dress or blazer?
Here’s everything you need to know about Carnival’s take on formal night – now called Elegant Night – starting with the food…

1. The Menu Gets a Fancy Upgrade
One of the highlights of Elegant Night? The food gets a bit of a glow-up.
Expect to see special dishes on the menu that aren’t usually available – think filet mignon, lobster tail, prime rib, or teriyaki salmon. It’s a step above the usual evening fare.
Just note that some premium items (from the Steakhouse Selection) still come with an extra charge, and while the appetisers and desserts may feature a couple of special items, most will be familiar favourites.
2. Speciality Restaurants Stay Casual
Don’t feel like dressing up but still want a nice meal? Head to a speciality restaurant.
Most of Carnival’s speciality venues stick to their usual Cruise Casual dress code, even on Elegant Night. That means you can enjoy a more refined dinner without needing to dress to the nines.
Some venues may ask you to skip the shorts, but the guidelines are relaxed – and you’ll be informed when booking.
3. Elegant Night Is Totally Optional
Hate dressing up? No worries – you can skip Elegant Night altogether.
There’s no ship-wide dress code, so if formalwear isn’t your thing, head to the buffet and enjoy dinner like any other night. No fuss, no judgement.
Carnival wants you to have a good time, whether you’re in sequins or sandals – so if casual and comfy is more your vibe, lean into that.

4. They’re Not Actually Called “Formal Nights”
Carnival dropped the term formal night over a decade ago and replaced it with Elegant Night.
The idea is the same – guests are encouraged to dress up, enjoy a fancier dinner, and soak up a touch of glamour. But calling it elegant rather than formal makes it feel less intimidating.
So if your schedule mentions Elegant Night, that’s your cue to dress up – if you want to.
5. Expect One or Two Per Cruise
Unless you’re on a one-night sailing (rare), your cruise will likely feature at least one Elegant Night.
Carnival schedules one Elegant Night on cruises lasting 2 to 5 days, and two for sailings of 6 days or longer. These usually take place on the second or third night, and again near the end of the cruise.
Unlike some other lines, Carnival doesn’t always hold Elegant Nights on sea days – so you might find yourself getting glammed up after a full day ashore.
6. Don’t Go Too Casual
Carnival suggests a smart look for Elegant Night – think dress trousers and a shirt with a jacket for men, or a cocktail dress or blouse and skirt for women.
Still, it’s flexible. Jeans and a polo shirt? Totally fine.
A few guests might raise an eyebrow, but most won’t even notice – just avoid looking like you’ve come straight from the pool.
7. Some Go All Out – Most Keep It Simple
You’ll see everything from tuxedos and evening gowns to smart-casual looks like slacks and a collared shirt.
The full black-tie look is becoming less common, but if you want to go all out, go for it – just know you’ll be in the minority.
8. Technically, You Could Be Turned Away – But Rarely Are
Carnival does have a few firmer dress rules for the Main Dining Room on Elegant Night.
Outfits like cut-off jeans, flip-flops, sleeveless tops, swimwear, and slogan tees are officially banned – and wearing them could mean being asked to dine elsewhere.
That said, enforcement is light. As long as you avoid the obvious no-gos, you’ll be fine – though pushing the limits might earn you a few side-eyes.
9. It’s Classy, But Still Low-Key
Elegant Night aims for a bit of sophistication – but without the stuffy atmosphere.
Many guests treat it like a slightly nicer dinner and nothing more, so the vibe stays relaxed. There’s no need to worry about etiquette or formal behaviour.
While someone might grumble about a fellow guest’s outfit, most people are too busy enjoying themselves to care.

10. Kids Don’t Need to Dress Up (Unless They Want To)
There’s no strict dress code for children on Elegant Night – the guidance is aimed at adults.
If your kids want to join in with the fun, great – a dress or smart trousers will do nicely. But if they’d rather wear a T-shirt and shorts, that’s usually fine too (just skip the flip-flops and swimwear).
Some families opt to have the kids eat with their friends at the buffet or in the kids’ club instead. It’s worth asking about, especially if dressing up isn’t their idea of fun.
11. You Might Get a Photo With the Captain
Carnival sometimes offers photo opportunities with the Captain on Elegant Night, but it’s not guaranteed.
If the chance comes up, go for it – especially if you’re already dressed up. It makes for a great cruise memory.
