Princess Cruises has shared the heartbreaking news that Captain Michele Bartolomei passed away following a sudden medical emergency while aboard the Diamond Princess. The incident occurred in the early hours of May 19, 2025, as the ship sailed near Taiwan.
According to guests onboard, a medical emergency call was made over the ship’s loudspeaker at 2:30 AM. It was later confirmed that the call was for Captain Bartolomei, who sadly did not survive. In the hours that followed, Princess Cruises issued an official letter to passengers, expressing profound sorrow and support for the captain’s family and the crew.
A Respected Leader
Captain Bartolomei was a highly regarded figure within the Princess Cruises fleet. Known for his professionalism, dedication, and calm leadership, he devoted nearly three decades to the company, having joined in August 1995. His career at sea began even earlier, working on private yachts, gas tankers, and cargo vessels before finding his long-term home in cruising.
A passionate mariner and fisherman, Captain Bartolomei spent 18 seasons sailing through Alaska’s Inside Passage—waters he knew intimately and loved deeply. Off-duty, he enjoyed fishing in the Pacific Northwest aboard his personal boat. His warmth, professionalism, and deep love for the ocean left a lasting impression on both passengers and colleagues.
In their statement, Princess Cruises wrote:
“Our hearts are with Captain Bartolomei’s family during this incredibly difficult time, and we extend our deepest condolences to them. We also stand in support of the entire Diamond Princess crew and all employees across our company who had the honor of working alongside him.”
Captain Salvatore Macera has now assumed command of the Diamond Princess. Guests have been assured that their safety and the smooth operation of the voyage remain a top priority. The ship’s experienced bridge team continues to navigate forward with care and professionalism.
