Two Vietnamese cruise passengers have sadly died following an accident at Sarakiniko Beach on the Greek island of Milos on Friday, 8th August 2025.

The couple, reported to be in their 50s or 60s, were part of a cruise excursion and had arrived earlier that day at the island’s main port of Adamas. According to local authorities, the woman was standing on the island’s exposed northern shoreline when a sudden strong gust of wind caused her to lose her footing and fall into the sea. Her husband entered the water to try to reach her, but both were overcome by the rough conditions.

White volcanic rock cliffs curve around a tranquil turquoise bay under a cloudless blue sky. The unique smooth formations and deep blue water suggest a serene coastal landscape, likely on a Greek island like Milos.

Winds in the area were recorded at up to 50mph (80km/h), creating challenging and dangerous sea states. Sarakiniko, known for its smooth white volcanic rock and dramatic cliffs, is highly exposed to the elements, making sudden weather changes particularly hazardous.

Rescue efforts were carried out by the Greek coastguard, with the help of private boats and divers. The couple were brought ashore and taken to a local health centre, where they were pronounced dead. The Vietnamese embassy in Greece confirmed the incident and said it is in contact with the victims’ families, as well as working with Greek authorities and the travel company involved to provide assistance.

While the cruise line has not been officially named, records show Celestyal Cruises’ Celestyal Journey was the only ship in port that day. The 55,800-gross-ton vessel, homeported in Piraeus (Athens), was on the final day of a seven-night Greek Isles itinerary before returning to Athens.

Large blue and white cruise ship named Celestyal Journey docked at a calm port with green hills and cloudy skies in the background. The ship is reflected in the still turquoise water, and lifeboats line its side above several passenger decks.

The tragedy occurred during a spell of severe weather affecting much of southern Greece, with the civil protection ministry issuing high-wind warnings for the Aegean and Crete. Ferry services were also disrupted, leaving travellers stranded in several ports.

Local maritime representatives have suggested that access to certain exposed coastal areas could be restricted during extreme weather to help prevent similar incidents in future.

Visitors to scenic but exposed locations such as Sarakiniko are urged to take extra care during high winds, remain well back from cliff edges, and stay alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
