Crystal Symphony Guests Attacked by Gang in Mombasa

Cruise guests on Crystal Symphony had a terrifying experience in Mombasa, Kenya, on Sunday 31st March 2025, after a group of around 50 youths attacked passengers near a local landmark, stealing phones, handbags, and other valuables.

The incident happened at the Pembe za Ndovu monument – four large, stylised elephant tusks forming an “M” to commemorate British royal visits – located on Moi Avenue in central Mombasa. Following the attack, Crystal Symphony cancelled the remainder of the port visit and made a swift departure, choosing not to take any chances.

While no injuries were reported, the incident has raised concerns over safety in certain cruise destinations. Local police and county officials quickly increased patrols in the area, and representatives from the Kenya Tourism Board and National Police Service boarded the ship to personally apologise to guests and offer reassurances.

“Officers from the Kenya Tourism Board and the National Police Service boarded the ship to apologise for the attack and assure the tourists,” said a KTB spokesperson.

Kenya Travel Advisory Already at Level 2

The US Department of State currently has Kenya listed under a Level 2 advisory – Exercise Increased Caution – due to risks of crime, including muggings and thefts, often involving fast-moving motorbikes. The advisory, updated on 17th March 2025, specifically highlights that handbags and phones are prime targets, and that police response is often limited, even in tourist areas.

Interestingly, Mombasa itself hasn’t previously been flagged as a particular area of concern, making this attack all the more shocking. That said, cruise lines are constantly reviewing safety reports, and this latest event has clearly prompted action.

Crystal Symphony’s Itinerary & What Happens Next

The 51,044-GT Crystal Symphony is currently on a 25-night sailing from Mumbai to Cape Town, with 1,169 guests and crew on board. Before arriving in Kenya, the ship had safely visited ports in India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the Seychelles. Still to come: stops in Tanzania and South Africa, including an overnight stay in Cape Town.

This Mombasa visit was Crystal Symphony‘s final call to Kenya for the year. The next scheduled visit isn’t until January 2026, when the ship is due to return for an overnight stop.

Other cruise lines, including Azamara, Viking, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas, are also scheduled to call on Kenya – but whether this incident prompts further changes remains to be seen.

Should Cruise Passengers Be Worried?

Let’s be clear – while incidents like this are disturbing, they are still relatively rare. Cruises remain one of the safest ways to travel, and cruise lines are quick to react when there’s any hint of danger. If needed, ports are skipped, and itineraries are tweaked without hesitation.

We’ve seen this before: Royal Caribbean suspended calls to Labadee, Haiti in 2024 due to civil unrest, and cruise visits to New Caledonia were cancelled multiple times due to political demonstrations.

Even at sea, safety is taken seriously. Just recently, Cunard’s Queen Anne reduced deck lighting and closed outdoor spaces overnight when sailing through pirate-prone waters in the Philippines. The message is clear – cruise lines are not taking chances.

Final Thoughts

It’s a shame a rare destination like Mombasa—known for its rich history and stunning coastal beauty—ends up in the headlines for the wrong reasons. But guest safety comes first, always.

If you’re heading out on a cruise soon, keep an eye on official travel advisories, follow guidance from your cruise line, and be smart when ashore. A little caution goes a long way – and you’ll still have the trip of a lifetime.
