A cruise crew member was arrested at Port Canaveral on March 24, 2026, after allegedly shoplifting while ashore.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, the man was detained by local deputies and later transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection after local processing was completed.

After the arrest, deputies contacted CBP in Cape Canaveral. Federal authorities then issued an immigration detainer, allowing them to take custody of the crew member once the sheriff’s office had finished its part of the case.

The sheriff’s office said he was processed for removal from the United States, taken to Orlando International Airport, and escorted onto a flight home.

Officials have not released the crew member’s name, nationality, cruise line, or further details about the alleged shoplifting offence.

Likely Linked to MSC Meraviglia

Authorities did not identify the ship involved.

However, Port Canaveral’s schedule shows MSC Meraviglia was the only cruise ship listed as a port-of-call visit on March 24, arriving at 1 p.m. and departing at 9 p.m. That makes it the likely vessel involved, although it has not been officially confirmed.

MSC Meraviglia had sailed from New York on March 22 on a 7-night Bahamas itinerary. MSC Cruises had not publicly commented at the time of writing.

Why Removal Happened Quickly

Cruise ship crew members working in US waters typically travel under a C1/D seaman visa, which allows temporary entry tied to maritime employment.

The cruise industry also relies heavily on international workers, with many crew members coming from countries including the Philippines, India, parts of Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Because those workers are in the US under limited employment-related permissions, cases involving arrest or immigration action can move quickly once CBP becomes involved.

For now, officials have released only limited information, and no further details about the alleged theft have been made public.

Cases involving cruise crew members being arrested during port calls are relatively rare, especially compared with the huge number of international crew moving through US ports every year. That is part of what makes incidents like this stand out when they do happen.
