Carnival Cruise Line is facing backlash from passengers due to a controversial change in its Cheers! unlimited alcohol package policy.
The new rule mandates that if one adult in a cabin purchases the package, all adults aged 21 and over in the same cabin must also buy it.
While this policy has sparked widespread dissatisfaction, it’s worth noting that similar rules are already in place with other major cruise lines, aiming to prevent sharing of beverage packages. Combined with a 17% price increase, the change has left many passengers questioning the value of the offering.

Previously, guests on cruises lasting six nights or more paid $70.74 per day for the Cheers! package, which includes both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The revised policy raises the cost to $82.54 per person per day, inclusive of an 18% gratuity. This price hike has particularly upset passengers on longer cruises, who feel burdened by the increased cost for drinks they may not consume.
The policy has been described as “outrageous” by many affected passengers, highlighting the growing dissatisfaction with Carnival’s approach to onboard beverage services. Social media platforms have become a hub for passengers to express their frustration and disappointment, amplifying the backlash against the cruise line.
In response to the criticism, Carnival has justified the policy change as a measure to prevent program abuse. According to Carnival’s brand ambassador, John Heald, the policy aims to address issues related to the misuse of the Cheers! package.

The company argues that, despite the price increase, the per-drink cost remains lower than purchasing drinks individually. Carnival also offers alternative beverage packages, such as Bottomless Bubbles, to provide passengers with more options.
The situation at Carnival reflects broader trends within the cruise industry, where rising costs have prompted companies to adjust their pricing and policies. As cruise lines navigate the challenges of increasing operational expenses, passengers are experiencing changes in the cost and structure of onboard services. The challenge for cruise lines lies in aligning company policies with customer expectations to deliver a memorable and enjoyable cruise experience.
