In December 2024, a norovirus outbreak was reported on Holland America Line’s Rotterdam cruise ship, impacting nearly 100 individuals, including 83 guests and a dozen crew members.
This incident marked the second outbreak on the company’s vessels within the month. Passengers and crew experienced symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. The ship had departed from Fort Lauderdale on December 8.

Holland America Line responded swiftly by implementing enhanced sanitation protocols in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent further transmission.
Upon the ship’s return to Fort Lauderdale, comprehensive sanitization measures were conducted before the next voyage. Guests were informed of adjusted boarding times to accommodate the additional cleaning efforts.
The CDC noted that the cruise line also isolated affected passengers and crew as part of their containment strategy. This outbreak followed similar incidents on Princess Cruises’ Ruby Princess and Holland America’s Zuiderdam earlier in the month.
The CDC has recorded 14 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruises in 2024, with norovirus identified as the cause in most cases. Although cruise ships are often associated with such outbreaks, they account for only 1% of all reported cases, which can occur in any congregate setting.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus and a common cause of gastrointestinal illness. It spreads easily in close quarters, making cruise ships a potential hotspot for outbreaks. However, experts emphasize that norovirus can occur in any congregate setting, not just on cruise ships.
Travelers are advised to practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, to prevent infection. Public health experts continue to monitor and manage outbreaks to ensure the safety and well-being of travelers.
