A woman who went overboard from Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas in the Mediterranean has been found alive following an extensive search and rescue operation.

The 44-year-old passenger went missing on Friday, October 9, while the ship was sailing through the Ionian Sea near Greece. Her disappearance prompted a major search involving Greek authorities and nearby vessels.

More details have since emerged about how she was found, including newly released footage showing the rescue operation.

Woman Found Alive Following Search in the Ionian Sea

According to Greek authorities, the woman is a 44-year-old citizen of El Salvador who went overboard approximately 72 nautical miles southwest of Zakynthos on Friday morning.

The Greek Coast Guard coordinated a search involving several vessels and an aircraft, while Odyssey of the Seas remained in the area to assist.

During the search, rescue crews discovered a flashing light associated with a circular life ring in the water. The woman was later spotted alive by a passing cargo ship, identified as the Madeira-flagged MSC Rossella III, which was assisting with the operation.

She was found conscious inside a flotation ring in the early hours of Saturday, October 10, approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of Zakynthos. A Greek Coast Guard rescue boat recovered her from the water, and its crew provided first aid before taking her to the port of Katakolo.

According to Greek public broadcaster ERT and subsequent reports from Greek newspaper Ta Nea, an ambulance transported her to the Andreas Papandreou General Hospital in Pyrgos for medical examinations and observation.

Initial passenger reports placed the rescue between approximately 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., while ERT reported that she was located at around 4 a.m. The exact sequence of when she was spotted, recovered, and when confirmation reached the cruise ship has not been established.

The woman reportedly spent more than 12 hours in the water before being brought to safety.

Coast Guard Releases Footage of the Rescue

On Sunday, October 11, the Hellenic Coast Guard released video footage showing the rescue operation near Zakynthos.

The footage shows rescue personnel approaching the woman in the water, where she can be seen with a flotation device around her. The video provides a closer look at how rescue crews recovered the passenger following the extensive search.

Greek media outlets, including Ta Nea and Alpha TV, published the footage following its release.

The footage also supports the Coast Guard’s account that the woman was conscious when recovered and had been using a flotation ring. The Coast Guard’s updated report identified MSC Rossella III as the cargo vessel that first located her, before its own rescue personnel brought her aboard their boat.

Captain Confirms Rescue as Passengers Share Updates

Passengers aboard Odyssey of the Seas received confirmation of the rescue on Saturday morning, when the ship’s captain made an announcement over the public address system at approximately 10 a.m.

According to Royal Caribbean Blog, the captain began his announcement by saying:

“First of all, I would like to share with you some great news.”

He explained that the crew had received word of the rescue at approximately 2:30 a.m. and that the woman had been taken to a hospital. He also told passengers that she had walked off the rescue boat without assistance.

Several passengers discussing the incident on Reddit said she was receiving treatment for hypothermia but appeared to be in stable condition.

One passenger wrote:

“Our cruise captain confirmed she was found alive, is at a mainland hospital and is doing well.”

Another passenger reported:

“Captain just updated she was found alive and was taken to a hospital, walked off on her own accord, she is fine other than hypothermia”

These accounts suggest the woman was conscious and able to walk following her rescue. Greek authorities have independently confirmed she was conscious when found, although no detailed medical report has been made public.

Cruise Ship Spent Hours Assisting With the Search

The emergency began on Friday, October 9, when the woman was reportedly discovered missing at approximately 6 a.m. local time.

Odyssey of the Seas had departed Mykonos and was traveling through the Ionian Sea toward Naples when the ship changed course to assist with the search.

Passengers reported that the captain informed them of the situation at approximately 10 a.m., several hours after the woman was believed to have gone overboard. The ship then spent much of Friday circling the surrounding waters while rescue crews searched for the passenger.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that a rescue operation was underway and issued a statement before the woman was found:

“We immediately launched a search and rescue effort and are working with authorities. Our Care Team is actively providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the operation was coordinated by Greece’s Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center. The search involved a Coast Guard rescue boat, a patrol vessel, nearby commercial ships, and a Super Puma helicopter from the Greek Air Force.

Passengers reported that Odyssey of the Seas spent approximately 14 hours assisting with the search before resuming its journey toward Italy late Friday evening. Although the cruise ship had already left the search area when the woman was found, Greek rescue teams continued searching until she was safely recovered.

Royal Caribbean Cancels Final Stop in Naples

The prolonged search also affected the itinerary for passengers aboard Odyssey of the Seas.

The ship was operating a seven-night Greek Isles cruise that departed Civitavecchia, the port serving Rome, on October 4, 2026. The itinerary included visits to Santorini, Kusadasi in Turkey, and Mykonos, with Naples scheduled as the final port of call on Saturday, October 10.

But after spending much of Friday involved in the search, the ship was no longer able to follow its original schedule. Passengers were informed that Naples would be canceled and that the vessel would head directly toward Civitavecchia instead.

One passenger explained the situation on Reddit:

“As of 11pm last evening (Friday evening) we had been conducting search and rescue for about 14 hours before we started moving towards Civittivecchia (Rome’s port),”

For passengers who had planned excursions in Naples, the cancellation meant missing opportunities to visit places such as Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius.

Some guests expressed disappointment about losing the final stop, particularly those who had been looking forward to visiting the region for years. At the same time, passengers acknowledged the importance of the search and the relief of learning that the missing woman had survived.

There were also concerns about onward travel arrangements, especially among international passengers with flights booked after the cruise.

Reports from aboard the vessel suggested that weather conditions were worsening as the ship traveled toward Italy. It remains unclear whether the weather played any part in canceling Naples or whether the decision was entirely due to the time spent searching.

Odyssey of the Seas was scheduled to finish its sailing in Civitavecchia on Sunday, October 11, as originally planned. No confirmed change to the disembarkation date was announced in the initial reports.

Circumstances Surrounding the Incident Remain Unclear

While the woman has been rescued, authorities have not confirmed how or why she entered the water.

Earlier passenger accounts on Reddit suggested that she had taken an inflatable life ring before going overboard. Another account mentioned a flashing light associated with the ring being found during the search.

Greek Coast Guard reports have since confirmed that a flashing light from a circular life ring was discovered and that the woman was located conscious inside a flotation ring. However, authorities have not established how she obtained the flotation device or whether the incident was accidental or intentional.

The Katakolo Port Authority is conducting a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the incident. No further findings have been publicly announced.

The rescue comes just weeks after another cruise ship overboard emergency involving Carnival Panorama in September 2026. In that incident, a 56-year-old passenger went missing, and the U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search after more than 41 hours without finding him.

The outcome involving Odyssey of the Seas was different, with the woman recovered alive following an overnight rescue operation involving Greek authorities and nearby commercial vessels.

Royal Caribbean has not publicly released further details about her condition following hospitalization or the circumstances of her disappearance.
