Royal Caribbean has revealed the godmother of Legend of the Seas, and this time the cruise line has looked far beyond the usual celebrity world.
Retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Lori J. Robinson, who made history as the first woman to lead a U.S. combatant command, will take on the role for Royal Caribbean’s third Icon Class ship.
Robinson spent 37 years in the Air Force, making her appointment especially fitting given when the ship will be officially named. The naming ceremony will take place in Fort Lauderdale on November 11, 2026 — Veterans Day — where Robinson will join Royal Caribbean leaders, crew members and guests as the ship receives its formal U.S. welcome.
The role is largely ceremonial, but it carries a long maritime tradition: the godmother is there to bless the ship and wish safe travels for everyone who sails on her.
Legend of the Seas is already sailing in Europe, so the ceremony won’t mark her first voyage. Instead, it comes just before the ship begins its first Caribbean season from Florida.
Why Lori Robinson Was Chosen
The choice makes more sense once you look at Robinson’s career.
She served in the U.S. Air Force for 37 years and became the first woman in U.S. history to lead a combatant command. She also led the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM).
Royal Caribbean highlighted both that record of leadership and Robinson’s work supporting people and families trying to balance demanding careers with life at home when announcing her as godmother.
She’s also a very different choice from the people who have filled the naming role for Royal Caribbean’s first two Icon Class ships.
Soccer star Lionel Messi performed the traditional godfather role for Icon of the Seas when the ship was officially named in January 2024, although Royal Caribbean gave him the title “Icon of Icon.” For Star of the Seas, the cruise line chose research astronaut and payload specialist Kellie Gerardi as godmother for its naming ceremony in August 2025.
The three choices are very different, but they do share something in common: each godparent is known for major achievements in their field, whether that’s sports, space exploration or military leadership.
So far, there hasn’t exactly been a standard formula for choosing an Icon Class godparent. Royal Caribbean has gone from one of the world’s most famous athletes to an astronaut and now a retired four-star Air Force general.
For Legend of the Seas, Robinson’s military background has an extra connection to the occasion, because the ship will be formally named on Veterans Day.
The Naming Ceremony Will Take Place on Veterans Day
There’s another reason Robinson’s appointment feels particularly fitting. Royal Caribbean will officially welcome Legend of the Seas to the U.S. during its naming ceremony in Fort Lauderdale on November 11, 2026 — Veterans Day.
The celebration will recognize Robinson’s groundbreaking career alongside veterans, active-duty service members and military families.
“I am deeply honored to be named godmother of Legend of the Seas and take part in such a special tradition for Royal Caribbean alongside my family,” Robinson said.
“Having the ship’s naming ceremony on Veterans Day makes this especially meaningful to me, and I look forward to recognizing the generations of men and women who have served.”
Robinson will be joined at the ceremony by Royal Caribbean leaders, crew members and guests as the ship receives its official naming before beginning its next chapter in Florida.
What Royal Caribbean Says About Its New Godmother
Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley said Robinson’s career and record of service made her a natural fit for the role.
“Gen. Lori J. Robinson embodies courage, determination and a spirit of service,” Bayley said, describing her as “a legend in her own right.”
He also pointed to Robinson’s 37 years in the Air Force and the barriers she broke during her career.
Royal Caribbean is using the naming ceremony to recognize more than Robinson alone. Bayley said the event will also acknowledge the many stories of military service within the wider Royal Caribbean community, including both crew members and guests.
That connection makes the choice especially relevant for a ceremony taking place on Veterans Day, rather than simply pairing the ship with a well-known name.
Legend of the Seas Is Heading to Florida Next
Legend of the Seas is currently spending its inaugural season in Europe, but that chapter won’t last much longer.
The ship will head to Fort Lauderdale in November 2026, where it will begin its first Caribbean season following the Veterans Day naming ceremony.
From Florida, Legend will sail a mix of six-night Western Caribbean cruises and eight-night Southern Caribbean itineraries. Destinations include Oranjestad, Aruba, and Willemstad, Curacao.
Every Caribbean sailing will also include a visit to Perfect Day CocoCay in The Bahamas.
It marks a major shift for the ship after its first summer sailing seven-night Western Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona and Rome.
What Guests Will Find on Legend of the Seas
Legend of the Seas is the third ship in Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class, and it comes with many of the big-ticket features the class is now known for.
Guests will find 28 dining options, seven pools, the Category 6 waterpark and Crown’s Edge, where part of the experience sends riders out over the side of the ship.
Entertainment is also a major part of the lineup. Legend features Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as its headline production, along with America’s Got Talent LIVE, which Royal Caribbean is bringing to sea for the first time.
There are also more than 20 bars, lounges and live music venues, giving the ship plenty going on well beyond the pool deck.
It’s a huge amount to pack into one ship, but that’s very much the point of Icon Class.
