Captain Kate McCue has confirmed that she is leaving Four Seasons Yachts as she shifts her attention toward supporting her father and spending more time at home after her mother’s unexpected death.
She announced the decision on social media on August 5, 2026.
“Sometimes life changes the course,” McCue wrote alongside the video. “After 30 years at sea, I’m making more room for family, joy and new adventures, including experiencing cruising from the other side for a change.”
Her departure interrupts a career that has kept her at sea for three decades, although McCue has made clear that she may return to professional sailing in the future.
For now, her plans center on family, travel and experiencing cruises without the responsibilities that come with being in command.
Family Events Changed Her Priorities
Family responsibilities were already shaping McCue’s plans before she resigned.
She had been away from work since April 2026 while helping her father recover from major back surgery.
Her mother’s sudden death two months later then changed how she viewed the time she had spent away at sea.
“That’s honestly when I realized that I’d spent the majority of the last year away from home because I was working,” McCue said in her announcement video.
She explained that the past several months had caused her to reconsider where she wanted to place her time and attention.
McCue said she remains proud of the direction her career has taken and believes her parents are proud of her accomplishments as well. At this stage, however, she wants to be more present for her father and take part in experiences they can share together.
What Comes Next for McCue
McCue plans to help her father pursue items on his bucket list, including cruise vacations.
Rather than working from the bridge, she will experience those sailings as a guest.
She indicated that they may travel aboard different kinds of vessels, although no cruise lines, ships, itineraries or destinations have been announced.
It will be a significant change for someone who has spent most of her adult life working at sea.
As captain, McCue was responsible for the operation and safety of the ship. As a passenger, she will be able to enjoy the journey without carrying those duties.
The change does not mean she has lost her connection with cruising.
When she announced her departure from Celebrity Cruises in February 2025, she said, “I’ve got too much salt in my veins to leave the sea behind.”
Her latest announcement suggests that sentiment has not changed.
This Is Not Necessarily Retirement
McCue has also clarified that she is keeping her professional options open.
“If you’re wondering, I am keeping my captain’s license active,” she said. “Sailing again is absolutely not off the table but for now there are so many new adventures ahead.”
Keeping the license active means she could return to command at some point.
She has not said when that might happen or what kind of role she would consider.
For the moment, there is no announced replacement position or new maritime job. Her focus remains on family rather than the next step in her career.
A Career That Spans Three Decades
McCue’s maritime career spans 30 years, with more than a decade of that time spent in command.
Her work included bringing two newly built vessels into service and participating in the development process for another new ship concept.
Her profile rose sharply at Celebrity Cruises when she became the first woman from the United States to take command of a large cruise ship.
The appointment made her one of the most visible women in a profession where senior command positions have traditionally been held by men.
McCue later became known for showing the public what life on the bridge actually looks like.
Through videos and social media posts, she explained ship operations, port arrivals, maritime traditions and the everyday responsibilities of a captain.
She left Celebrity Cruises in February 2025 and later joined Four Seasons Yachts as the luxury hospitality company prepared to enter the cruise and yacht market.
Her resignation brings that chapter to an end sooner than many of her followers expected.
Her Announcement Received an Immediate Response
McCue has more than one million followers across her social media platforms, giving her one of the largest public profiles of any cruise ship captain.
The Instagram post drew a rapid response. Within hours, engagement had passed 32,000 likes and 2,400 comments, many of them from passengers and followers offering support.

McCue received additional recognition from California State University Maritime Academy in May 2026, when the institution presented her with an honorary Doctorate of Science.
The award cited her contributions to maritime leadership and innovation.
It also reflected her influence as a woman in ship command and her efforts to make maritime careers more visible to a wider audience.
Her public role has helped passengers understand more about the people, training and responsibilities involved in operating a cruise ship.
Bug Naked and Willie
McCue’s followers have also closely followed the animals in her life.
Bug Naked, the elf-eared sphynx cat frequently featured in her Celebrity Cruises posts, died in December 2024 after complications associated with a dental procedure.
In April 2026, McCue took in Willie, a cat from the same litter, after his former owner needed to find him a new home.
The connection made Willie especially meaningful to McCue and to followers who had become attached to Bug Naked through years of social media updates.
Willie has since appeared in McCue’s personal posts, although she has not confirmed whether he will join any future cruise trips.
McCue Leaves the Door Open
McCue has not announced how long she expects to remain away from professional sailing.
She has also not confirmed what may follow her planned travels with her father.
