Netflix Is Releasing a New Costa Concordia Disaster Documentary

Netflix is turning its attention to the Costa Concordia disaster with a new documentary about one of the darkest moments in modern cruising.

Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea lands on July 10 and pieces together the 2012 sinking using testimony from people who lived through it, along with footage viewers haven’t seen before.

Netflix describes the documentary like this: “Never-before-seen footage and survivor accounts trace the 2012 shipwreck of a luxury cruise and the disaster that ensued, in this immersive documentary.”

The Costa Concordia Disaster Is Back in Focus

Costa Concordia ran aground off the Italian island of Giglio on January 13, 2012, after the ship moved off its planned route during a close sail-past, often called a salute, and struck rocks near shore.

The collision tore open the hull, water poured in, and the ship later capsized close to land.

Although many people were rescued, 32 lost their lives, making the sinking one of the worst cruise disasters in recent memory.

The story dominated headlines worldwide, both because of the death toll and because Captain Francesco Schettino faced fierce criticism for leaving the ship before the evacuation was over. He was later convicted in connection with the wreck, including on manslaughter charges, and given a 16-year prison sentence.

The sinking was picked apart in great detail afterward. Investigators concluded the ship had come far too close to Giglio during the salute, and the fallout pushed cruise operators to take a much harder look at route planning, bridge procedures, emergency response, and overall onboard safety protocols.

How the Disaster Changed Cruise Safety

The sinking also forced the cruise industry to rethink some of its safety routines, and passengers still see the effects of that today.

Before the accident, some cruise lines allowed safety briefings to take place after departure. That changed in the aftermath of the sinking, with mandatory muster drills now taking place before a ship leaves port or immediately after boarding.

Cruise lines also tightened bridge management and emergency procedures more broadly after the disaster.

It also changed how many people talk about cruising. Even though the industry has expanded massively since 2012, Costa Concordia is still one of the first examples raised whenever cruise safety or emergency planning comes up.

Netflix Keeps Returning to Cruise Stories

The documentary also fits into a bigger run of cruise-related titles on Netflix.

In 2025, the streamer released Trainwreck: Poop Cruise, about the 2013 Carnival Triumph incident, when an engine room fire knocked out propulsion and left around 4,000 people stuck in the Gulf of Mexico for days with no power, no working toilets, and worsening sanitation conditions onboard.

Netflix also released Amy Bradley Is Missing in July 2025. The three-part series revisits the disappearance of 23-year-old Amy Lynn Bradley, who vanished during a Caribbean sailing aboard Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas in March 1998. Decades later, the case is still unsolved.

These documentaries cover very different kinds of cruise stories, from disasters to unresolved disappearances. What they have in common is the lasting grip these cases still have on the public, long after the original events made headlines.
